Entry 18: The Outcome

It is been a while since I wrote on this blog, and once again I am scolding myself for not managing my time wisely. I am actually quite worried about myself because senior project proved me wrong. I am not a 100% motivated person. I slip some times; or maybe too often.
Other than that, today, I want to talk about the turn out of the art show, Inelegant Expression. The show me and fellow artists and musicians worked on for so many days; and how can I forget the parents who spend around 400 dollars for the show by renting tents and helping us print the art works. After two days of showing, we succeed to earn about $1000 for Japan. It was an unbelievable outcome for all of us. I was happy to see that everyone's hard work payed off.

To summarize the days of the shows, first, right after school on the Friday before, I started working. Ted, Alex and I went around our houses picking up materials and art works and then went to FedEx to print. For 6 hours, we were in FedEx printing and cutting papers. By the end of the day, around 12 o' clock, we were exhausted and grumpy. I did not forget to hang the "No Parking" sign at the gallery late at night.
I came home and got 4 hours of sleep and then started working again around six in the morning. I printed out the information tags for the art works and the artists which is essential for art shows what so ever. My printer kept messing up so it took me a while to fix everything up. Ted came over around eight to help me put the art works on the ready-to-go panel together. While my mom made some coffee for two of us, we hustled and Ted made a mistake by putting Laurel's abstract work up side down. After panicking a bit, I just put it the right way. After putting the art work on, as I hate to say, I started to order around Ted and my father to move the things into the car while I made sure everything was set and ready to go. That was stressful minutes since I never ordered people around so much before. I felt horrible despite the fact that I was the "director."

Ted and I drove down to the gallery and met up with other project members and parents. We had no time to waste; everyone started to move things out of their vehicles and started to set everything up. The tents were the big problem. They were big and no one was used to setting up the type of tents we had. So it took us a while to set it up and we were 20 minutes late from starting the show which was a big bummer to me. In the morning, not many people went by. I was starting to get worried. "What if no one comes?" "What if this show becomes a joke?" Many questions and paranoia appeared in my mind. However, around lunch time, people started to show up before or after they had their meal at Chow's which was right across the street from us. That is when we started to earn a lot of money. Baked goods were selling fast and musicians were getting a lot of tips in their jar. Many intrigued people showed up and walked slowly by the art tent. We sold out of our prints really fast so we had to write down customer's name and address in order to send it to them later after the show.
During this busy hours, I sold my painting to a gentleman for $100 despite the fact that it was not on sale. The thing is, he really liked the painting and really wanted to have it. So we shook hands and I said, "For Japan."
After our first day of the show, I went on and started printing more art works that we needed, and got ready for the next day. Which was not as hectic as the day before since all of us were not so unfamiliar with dealing with customers.

The second day was all about seeing new opportunities as many impressed adults came with a lot of interest in us. One gentlemen, who was in charge of the summer artist market wanted to know if we were interested in having our own booth at the market. He gave us his business card and all of us are definitely considering the event. Also, an elderly lady came by and asked me if she can buy my painting of the moon, "Unexplainable Anxieties." She wanted to know the original price and wanted me to paint her portrait which was a great honor to me. I never got an offer for a commission before so I was happily shocked.  I also met up with my third space mentor Alan Chin to talk about how the show is going in general. He showed us support and had few good conversation with all the kids which went very well.

By the end of the day, we could not believe the amount of money we managed to collect. Everybody was proud of each other and to all of us, it was a great event of our lives. Doing something on our own like this to help a foreign country in a great need, I think it is the most humble thing I have ever done.
This show changed the way I think of my passion. Now, I want to use my passion for art not just for living but for other people; To save and help people around the world. I am definitely looking out for more opportunities to have more shows like this, where young artists can show their best works and take chances.
I would say the show was a greater success than any one could have imagined, and I would love to do it again.

Entry 17: The Last Week Before the Show.

As our show date gets closer and closer, I become more and more aware of how far I have come to making this show possible.
So far, Kailey and I have created a facebook page to promote our show and it has been quite successful. So far according to facebook, we have 94 confirmed guests, but it does not necessarily mean that all of them will show up. I remember from my last year's experience when I was part of Hayden's small art show at the frame store. Many people said that they will come, but half of them did not show up and hopefully, it is different this time.

I been very stressed since the whole thing is becoming more and more realistic to me. I also have tons of school work to do so it has been quite a week. I keep telling myself not to lose focus and that life is a fight between myself.

Since our poster has been finalized, Kailey, Natalie, Ted, Alex and I have been going around town asking for permission to put our poster up. Places that are owned by corporations such as Safeway, Peet's Coffee, McCaulou's and more refused but all of them were impressed by the fact that we are only students and we are doing something like this. We were allowed to put our posters up at most of the local businesses around Lafayette.
The funniest thing was, we actually got a nerve to walk into the Round-Up Bar where we were laughed by mostly middle aged men. I asked if we could our posters up, posted three, and left as quick as possible.
I did not forgot to stop by the Gallery and drop off one.

Kailey, who was in charge of renting the tent is taking a while, but it seems like there is a storage problem. but we are very certain that we will get the tent at least by Friday, and it will be about 75 dollars. She is making me a little nervous since Friday is the day right before the show but I will keep my fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, Ted got us on the Lamorinda Patch! And it is a mystery, but some how, we ended up on the school bulletin also, I will check tomorrow if it was Ms. Taylor who has been very supportive of our show.

I have been going around school, inviting many of our favorite teachers. It seems like Acalanes has a strict posting rules so I was only allowed to post on the hallway bulletin boards. I will not complain but it was something different than what I expected; but that was my best effort to promote the show at school where most of our audience is from.

It seems like we are a bit confused on the printing of our art works. Everyone has a different plan and it is very disorganized. I will figure it out tomorrow when Kailey comes to school. She has been absent for past few days.

And now, here is the good news. I finally talked to Mr. Alan Chin !!!!!
I was so excited to get his contact information from Ms. Carbone. With my heart pumping overwhelmingly fast, I dialed his cellphone number. I practiced talking several times before the phone call, but I slipped few times during the conversation. I basically explained who I am, where I am from, and why I need his help. I think he was very happy to hear from an Acalanes student. He agreed to be my third space mentor and I got his e-mail address also. He asked me if I was Ms. Taylor's student and I said yes.

Next day, I talked about my phone call with Mr. Takahashi and Ms. Taylor. I asked her if he was her student but she said he was only Ms. Carbone's student; but she knew about him because he was known for his talent. He entered an adult art competition and did very well for a youngster. I think he is something very close to what I want to be. I want to have talent and be known for something I am good at.

I was so glad that Mr. Chin was such a friendly person because I was feeling so nervous when I was talking to him. I invited him to the art show and I really hope that he will come. He not only can be my senior project mentor, but can be my career mentor as well. He mentioned that when we meet for the interview, we can meet at Acalanes and I think that is a fantastic idea.

Entry 16: Our Poster Is Finalized!

Ted, a member of the project who is very skilled with photoshop has been helping me with designing our poster. I final edited the poster, and above is our finalized poster!
I spend all my time after school until I went to bed to finish this poster since we have shorter time to promote our show now. Ted did the background, which is a collage of one of each artists' art work and I did the text which I had a hard time fitting and wording all the information. I was really happy when I was done and I think the poster is very good looking.
All the members of the project accepted the poster. The poster will be printed so we can spread around the area including our school.
Today, I went around Lafayette looking for a place for printing service. I found Allegro Printing & Copy where I was offered 15 cents for each sheets; and I needed 200 sheets.
It cost about 30 dollars but I think that was a good deal. I did hear later that Kinko's has a better deal, which was 10 cents; I said to myself, "why didn't I thought of Kinko's?!"

The flyers should be ready by tomorrow morning so I can pick them up on my way to school. I am very excited to start putting them around. It is a mini stardom for all of us involved in this show.
And hopefully, this poster would be significantly affective for our promotion.

Entry 15: Meeting With The Gallery Ladies

Yesterday, Kailey and I were invited to meet the gallery ladies at the venue.
As I walked out of my car, I started to panic a little bit while I took out my laptop and my bag. The thing is, I was already a minute late. I knew the meeting was too early after school; I scolded myself.

As I was running to the door of the gallery, I went through the front parking lot where the show is supposed to be held. I pictured where the band, art tents and baking sale/cashier table would be set up; and I smiled with excitement.

As I walked in, Kailey and the gallery ladies were waiting for me. They happily greeted me we got some chairs to sit down. I had my print out of the show information in my hand and we basically went over what the students went over with me. They were okay with all the plans we presented which was very nice.
We talked mostly about our equipments: tents, tables, chairs, power and etc.

The gallery already owned two tents and a big table and they were willing to let us use.
We already had tables but they said we could just use theirs since that could be more convenient.
They also got out of their way to use their power source through their window.

They also offered to provide us with hooks for the display. "It's fine I have million of those at home!" said one of the gallery lady with such friendliness.

I did not forget to ask them about the parking issue. During the weekend, people often use the gallery parking lot to eat at Chow's which is right across. She said feel free to put ropes around the parking lot and indicate that the parking lot is not available for the weekend. That also confirmed that we are allowed to use the entire parking lot which was expected and hoped.
They also told us that at least one of the gallery managers will be with us the whole time to watch over us and help us with our community service.

They thought us donating our money to the Red Cross for Japan's natural disaster crisis was a fine idea. One of the lady suggested that some one should paint at the scene which tents to attract a good curious crowd. I volunteered to do so since painting is my main hobby; that should be very fun for me and the audience.

The ladies were willing to lend us anything we needed.
They were awfully generous; but they had a price for it which Kailey and I were more than happy to pay.
Ms. Miller owns a charity group that collects donated teddy bears which goes to police officers. When a child is involved in a stressful situation that involves the police, for example, a father being arrested, the police will give the child a teddy bear during the commotion. I thought that was a wonderful and creative charity.

She wanted us to make a facebook group for the charity and tell others. She said she does not know much about computers, and of course, we are part of the facebook generation and we could definitely help. Also, if anyone at Acalanes is interested for their community service, they could help.

The ladies said if we want to add more artists, works or anything, we could do it. They were really flexible about our planning.

One of Kailey's concern was neighboring stores and houses being disturbed by our music. Kailey was wondering if we should go around the area asking if the music at the gallery is okay. However, the ladies said that they had music around before and it seems like the neighbors are okay all the time which was a relief.
We did tell them that it would not be anything too loud or strange; our musicians are planning to play peaceful and calming songs. I thought it might be their concern since we are teenagers and youngsters are known to have a music taste that is not exactly similar to adults.

Everything was covered so far and all of us were happy with our meeting. I have told them that they can contact me if they had any questions or concerns. I could guess that they really liked us since they were being so nice and generous.

After saying thanking them, Kailey and I walked out the door and gave each other a high-five. We were so happy and excited that everything we planned was confirmed. I thanked Kailey since she used her amazing people skill. She has her excellent ways with adults.
I am glad that I have Kailey to help me out.

So far, my project is on a smooth sail.

Entry 14: Meeting Done!

I set up a meeting on Thursday at Acalanes Library to meet with all the people who are involved with the show.
Kailey, Ted, Ryan, Laurel, Natalie, Sonia and Alex came to the meeting. Unfortunately, Cybelle and Sarah who are involved in music for the show could not come. However, Alex and Kailey took some notes for two of the missing musicians which was awful nice of them.

At the meeting, I basically went through all the basic details about the show and we all discussed about things such as the name of the show, the kind of baked goods, the art works, the presentation of works and much more.
Here are things we have talked about in the meeting:
  • The date of the show is March 26th and 27th
  • The venue is Lafayette Art Galley
  • We decided to name the show "Inelegant Expression"
  • All the profit will go to a charity
  • The show should be at least 7 hours each day to fulfill our community service hour.
  • The flyers will be ready by March 18th at latest for us to put around town and school.
  • Natalie is in charge of the baking sale, and the profit will also add up to our donation.
  • Musicians can collect money too for the donation.
  • Ryan is playing for 4 hours each day and helping out at the show and other use of hours are up for the musicians.
  • We need some back up works just in case people do buy a lot of the works on sale.
  • I will set up a table where an artist can make art on the spot and sell.
  • Alex will also submit some art works.
  • Laurel will help Natalie with baking by baking some of her own.
  • Many of the art will be switched to fit the public's taste. (It sounds bad as artists but this will help us gather more money possibly).
  • Natalie will print all the flyers.
  • Ted will design the rough draft of the poster and give it to me for editing.
  • Sonia will get a piece done by March 18th that can be on sale.
  • When all the works are ready and organized, we will discuss about the pricing of the art sale.
  • When all the works are collected, I will work on the information tags and presentation of each.
  • Ryan, Ted and Laurel will print their own work.
  • We will possibly have a mandatory meeting again.
I am so happy that all the members of the project are so engaged and excited about the show. It makes me feel strong that we are all coming together for this project. Everyone is down to hear each others' input and everyone respects each other. Many of the kids came up with great ideas such as Natalie who came up with the idea of the baking sale and Kailey who came up with the idea of involving musicians in the project. This project became not only about my endeavor as an artist but also how I communicate with others to make my day dream come to reality.

I been continuing to talk to Mr. Takahashi about contacting Alan Chin, and it seems like Ms. Carbonne is the one with his contact and Mr. Takahashi did tried to contact Ms. Carbonne, but he could not get a hold of her.
Since I do know her personally, I will try to contact her on my own. She has troubles using cellphones so I am thinking about e-mailing her instead.
I thought getting a third space mentor would a lot smoother.

Ms. Miller from the Gallery sent me an e-mail about her, Kailey and I having a meeting about the show. I am very nervous about this because I want her see that we are trying our best to not be a hassle but maybe a helper for her gallery to attract more crowd and engage the community with power of art. I will meet with her after school on next Wednesday. I hope it goes well.

Entry 13: The Canvas Is Ready

The date is set and it will not be changed again!
Ms. Miller responded to me fast and said the requested date of March 26th and 27th is fine. However, she was worried about the weather; it could rain on the show date and that would be terrible. But Kailey said she owns several aid for it so I think we are covered.

I have been talking to Mr. Takahashi about contacting Mr. Chin, but I think Mr. T is still busy. I might actually take his contact with Mr. T's permission and contact Alan Chin on my own. That might appear more professional instead of Mr. T calling him in behalf of me.

I arranged a meeting for Thursday, which is tomorrow after school so everyone who is involved in the show can meet up and confirm all our plans. I also requested a set list for Ryan last night. I told him each day of the show is about 7 hours long and he said it might be hard for him to play for seven hours. However, he said it would be easy for him to play 4 hours and leave it to other musicians, Cybelle and Sarah. I agreed and now I must talk to both of the girls to see what they are up to in terms of their performance at the show.

I was sad to hear that Natalie, the girl in charge of the baking sale could not make it to the meeting because I really want this meeting to be mandatory. But Kailey will take notes for her and that should do it for Natalie.

I am now looking into printing all the photographs and illustrations and it seems like it could be quite pricey. But my parents are willing to help me out with budgeting the show. I am thinking about visiting all the artist's home and taking their original file of the photograph so I can print them at Fedex.
I am not sure about framing but I will ask Ms. Taylor about it.

Also it is very important for me to organize all the art pieces for the show. I have not even counted them yet and I am scolding myself for that.

I want to give at least a week of promotion so I should be done with planning and organizing the show in a week. Judy Miller would like to meet next week to see if everything's ready. That should be nerve wracking.

Entry 12: A Problem Is In The Air

I have asked Ms. Stanton about interviewing my outside mentor for the assigned interview, and she said I am able to do so. I am very excited because if I am lucky enough to talk to Mr. Chin, I could learn so much from him by this interview!

I have been keep exchanging e-mails with Ms. Miller from the gallery. As we decided on the show date, which was about to be April 2nd and 3rd, Kailey have informed me that she can not direct the show with me on the date. As she told me about it on our way to the art room, I panicked. "So this is it, the hardship. I was wondering when it was about to happen."
I am afraid of irritating Ms. Miller with all the change but I had no choice but to send her an e-mail again about the date.
I am not sure if the gallery will allow us to change it to the particular date but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Entry 11: Introduction - The Fellow Artists.

Ted: A photographer, Ted shows great maturity with his pictures. His scenery work not only captures the beauty and the ambiance of the place perfectly, but also captures the color and the shade with so much control. His works are sophisticated, yet straight forward subject wise. That is hard among many young artists but Ted is successful.

Kailey: The co-director of this show, Kailey has a great social skill that I needed help with. Her friendly and open style of conversation blended well with my professionalism which made every single meetings with possible venues very smooth. Pen and Ink is what she is best at; she has control over her pen but she is never too stiff. Her work is free yet balanced with the medium very well. She concentrates on her work more than anyone I know.

Ryan: Ryan is not only submitting his photography work, but also will play his cello at the show. With out Ryan, this show would not be the same as I dream. What I like about his photographs are the details and maturity of the work. His work is above high school level. Also, when I say detail, I mean he has a lot visual offer in his pictures. He always include more than one simple subjective in his works and it works fantastically.

Katie: I would call her a queen of style. Her art style is so unique and characteristic that once you go through her sketchbook, you will never forget about it. Her work resembles cartoon, yet very sophisticated. That is not a easy thing to do. The viewers will fall in love with all the characters she creates.

Laurel: A talented girl, Laurel is not only good at photography but painting. Her subjects are dark and emotional. Her work has a euphoric effect; she successfully makes her work very memorable. Her works are mysterious and they are one of those art works that appear to have a behind story, which easily infatuates the viewers.

Tiffany: She is not one of those artsy-fartsy kids at school. Art is not a priority to Tiffany. But that does not matter; she always make very successful surrealism pieces. Artists tend to stand unoriginal when it comes to surrealism works but Tiffany's works are very characteristic, yet fits the definition of classical surrealism.

Entry 10: A Tough Road?

As I have mentioned in my last post, I been discussing about my project with Ms. Miller from the gallery. To explain with more details, I was recently informed about a reception of the sculpture garden, that will hold on the same Saturday of our planned show. I thought that could make a lot of things very inconvenient. She said having a one day show could work fantastically but I would prefer a show that lasts more than a day. So I suggested, "How about a week before that?" And she said she will look into it. I am still waiting until March 2nd, which I have no problem of. She also confirmed that a bake sale is allowed with music. The profit of the bake sale will add up to our profit for the donation.

Ms. Miller mentioned how it might be hard to display and take down art two times for the two day show but I really have no problem with that and I am sure other artists are willing to help. They are really supportive and helpful

Today, I will meet with fellow artists including Ted, Kailey, Ryan, Tiffany and Katie to discuss about which charity we want to make donation to. Other artists, I will send them an e-mail.
I really feel a need to organize all the art works. I do have some of them but I know I also need to make information tags for the each works. But that should come later.

Entry 09: I Need Some Slaps In The Face

I been very unproductive lately. I know this can not be an excuse, but I been sick and depressed. However, I know this can not hold my back any longer. So I fired up my motivation rocket today.

Since I missed English WISE meeting yesterday, I dropped by the class and picked up the paper I have missed. The paper was a basic guideline about who and how should the students interview for the project. I am a bit lost about the interview. But I am sure I can ask Ms. Taylor about local artists who would be perfect for this.

I did not visit Mr. Takahashi last week, so as I got back to school today, that was the first thing on my list to do. So I visited Mr. Takahashi this lunch to ask for Mr. Chin's contact so I can ask him to be my outside mentor and perhaps my career mentor, but that is another story.
I told Mr. Takahashi how I have been doing some research on Mr. Chin. He said he will see what he can do. He said he will contact him but I insisted that I contact him. I know it should be me who is contacting him since this project is all about me being an adult.

I been discussing about the show with Ms. Judy Miller from the venue. It seems like they have an event on the Sunday we were thinking about having a show so I was thinking about moving the show a week earlier. Ms. Miller said she will talk about it with other managers.
Also, we are allowed to use their display aids, have music and baking sale. How fun! Ms. Miller is going on a vacation now so I have to wait but meanwhile, I shall start on the interview and other assignment for senior project.

Entry 08: Alan Chin

Unfortunately, I could not meet with Mr. Takahashi this week. But I will talk to him next week after the four day weekend. I am still on my search for the outside mentor. I really need to ask for his contact from Mr. Takahashi.
I did some research about Alan Chin, and I could find a helpful article from, what do you know, Blueprint, the school news paper.

An explosion of neon greeted anyone lucky enough to stop by the California College of the Arts’ Isabel Percy West Gallery between December 5 and 12. When viewers stepped into the gallery, they truly fell into Subconciousness, which was incidentally the name of Lamorinda legend Alan Chin’s showpieces.
The show was based on states of subconsciousness and consciousness. Chin used his dreams as inspiration and guidance for his pieces.
“What I’m doing is taking work from my dreams and from reality and reworking them because they keep existing differently in my dreams,” said Chin. “So I keep reworking them in reality and [I] try to get them to the point where they look like what’s in my dreams.”

As I surfed around the web more about Mr. Chin, I have discovered, this person is not just a local artsy fartsy man from Acalanes; he certainly is a big deal, a real artist who is making money and fame.
Alan Chin is active in San Francisco Bay Area, showed talent and passion in art since he was a child. And he attended California College of Arts! My number one college I wish to attend! He is only in his early twenties, and already achieved so much.
I was thinking, that I would love to ask him to be my mentor. He is perfect.
On Tuesday, I will meet with Mr. Takahashi and remind him about Mr. Chin's contact. I am looking forward to contacting him because he can not only be my outside mentor but a serious art mentor.

Entry 07: Another Day

Today, I had my meeting with Mr. Takahashi. He was glad to hear that I finally got the venue.
Now it is time for me to get on to my next mission as I told him, getting a third space mentor.
Mr. Takahashi was kind enough to mention and recommend a possible mentor for me. An Acalanes alumni just had an art show recently so he might be a perfect mentor for me. I remember he was on the Blueprint Newspaper some time ago. I am excited to receive more information from Mr. Takahashi soon. I feel ashamed of not remembering his name.
If he does not work out, I am planning on contacting Ms. Carbonne to see if she is available. I know she is occupied with traveling and spending time with her love one but I think she would be another perfect mentor.

I also replied to the gallery today, informing them about the date of the show I am thinking about and if Kailey's friend can have a mini bake sale that would also contribute to the general profit for donation for a charity.
I also came up with an idea of having a desk there where I do some art work and sell them. That would be fun. Speaking of which, Tiffany, one of the artist of the project have told me that she does not want her art work to be sold. So I saw the importance of making sure to labeling each art work if it is on sale or not.

Ryan showed up at school with his cello today and was playing it wonderfully. Amazing thing is, he only started playing since last Christmas so obviously, he has a hell of a talent. I suggested that he play his cello at the show and he agreed and said that was what he was thinking of doing.

Everything is going well so far and I hope I keep it this way.

Entry 06: Can it be more exciting than this?

Ever since the meeting with the Lafayette Gallery, I was anxiously waiting for the response.
What do you know, I got the response I wanted!
As I was checking my e-mail at lunch, I got an e-mail from one of the authorities from the gallery.
This is the e-mail that got me jumping up and down:

Hi, I'm glad to report that you and Kailey are welcome to have your Outside Art show in our parking lot.  Come up with some preferred dates in April or May and we will find a date that works for you, the Lafayette gallery and the Art Room. Should be a fun event.
Judy Miller

I have not replied yet but I am thinking that early April would be a good time. The moment of me getting the e-mail was probably the most progressive moment of this project. We finally have a venue. We have a platform to build our dream now. This is incredibly exciting.

I am now more excited to talk to Mr. Takahashi now. And speaking of mentors, I really need to contact either Glenn or Ms. Carbonne about being my mentor. I should get on that very soon. It seems like most of my English WISE classmates have their third-space mentor now.
When I reply to Judy's e-mail, I must not forget to ask if there is any charge since they have not mentioned it yet. But I am sure they are willing to help us out with the event since they are aware that we are just high school students.
I contacted all the artists in the project about the good news and everyone's very happy and excited as much as I am. I see a light of hope now contrast to before I got the e-mail; it is a great feeling.
I can not wait to tell my parents too since they have been so supportive of my senior project.
Now that the biggest problem is out of the way, I shall focus on my research paper and my interview. I have good deal of optimism now.
Also, I was thinking we might need some more art pieces in the show but that should not be so hard since I know many talented artist around.
My mind is busy day dreaming about the future event and what it would look like. There would be good art on display and Ryan would play music as people slowly walk, looking at all the great works. I would invite all the teachers and people I know. I would create the event on Facebook and it should be so much fun!

Entry 05: Had my meetings with the possible venue!

Last Friday, I made a good progress in this project! After school, Kailey and I went to Papillon in Downtown Lafayette with our group portfolio.
We met with the manager who I have talked on the phone before, and the meeting was going swell as I flipped through the pictures of the group's art work in the laptop. We both explained who we are and what we are up to. As we introduced ourselves as Acalanes students, she said her daughter is also an Acalanes student.
I also explained to her that the current collection we have right now shows more less what level of skill we are working with, and there might be several more works joining the collection in the future.
The manager liked most of our art works except for the ones that are a bit dark. She said some of the photography works were "not for coffee shops" but she liked all the other works. However, the manager told us later that they are all booked up for 2011, and she could get us a show in 2012. Kailey and I looked at each other with disappointment. Our vision of people seeping coffee and gazing into the hung art works were gone. However, the lady said she will keep us posted just in case someone decides to cancel a show. So we left our contacts to her and left the cafe.
Kailey and I talked about how hopeless we are now that we lost one of our favorite possible venue. I was very reluctant to ask the library for a venue since they have so many red tapes.
Last year, my friend Hayden tried to have a show in the library, and although he got a signature from one of the authorities, right when he was about to do it, other authorities disagreed to let him have a show.
Library seemed like an unsafe possibility to me at that point and I started to regret choosing my senior project as having an art show. Cynicism and anxiety took over me. "I am just a high schooler artist wannabe; what was I thinking?"
Then all sudden, Kailey pointed her finger at the Lafayette Art Gallery which was right across the road. I was a bit cynical but I decided to give it a try. As we were crossing the street to get to the gallery, I saw a big empty space around the gallery. I could imagine the show being outdoor. We could get some aisle, or something to hang the works. We could have Ryan playing his guitar at the bench. It could be a mini festival and since it is right by the Chow's, we could attract a big crowd.
With some excitement, we entered the gallery, and met the gallery lady who was very nice. We explained who we were and what we were up to again, and showed her our art works just like we did at Papillon before. While I was flipping through the works, the lady made me stop and said that she already knows that we are fantastic and does not have to see more of our works and I do not think that she was lying. She really liked our idea of us having a show. She also thought giving all the profit to a charity was great. Kailey and I started to smile as things started to look brighter.
The lady said after the meeting on Monday, she will get back to us on Tuesday. Not only that, she said she could see if they could lend us a hanging aid for our works for free!
With high optimism, she took our contact and wished us luck with a smile that made my day.

Kailey and I stepped out of the gallery and gave each other a high five with joy. Although it was not sure yet, I was glad to have another possible venue with a good chance.
I can not wait until I have my meeting with Mr. Takahashi. By the time I see him, I hope I know the result of our request.

Entry 04: Had My Meeting With Mr. Takahashi

So I visited Mr. Takahashi today to make up the meeting.
I explained what I been doing since our last meeting and it seems like he is fine with what I have been doing. I saw many nods of approval.
His point was basically to keep trying and he thought it was good that I was considering alternative venues rather than the library alone.

We both agreed that I should try my best to have the show in Lafayette, as I mentioned how my plan b would be having the show somewhere outside the town. However, as he knows, that would complicate a lot of things.

I am planning on saving all the art works in my dad's laptop and bringing that with me to all the meetings I have on Friday. I have several portfolio presentation this year and presenting art works is not a hard thing for me, which makes this very easy.
I have already collected most of the art works from other fellow artists in the project. Most of them were on the web already so it is very convenient

I am very nervous about the Friday. The next meeting I have with Mr. Takahashi will be very important.

Entry 03: Slacking Off Already!?

Today was incredibly unproductive.
I not only was late to my Senior Project Meeting, I did not have my meeting with Mr. Takahashi.
Mr.T and I arranged our meeting today after 6th period, and as it sounds ridiculous, I for got.
"I forgot" is something I never wanted to say doing this project, and there is no excuse for what I have done or not have done today.
I am planning on going back to Mr. T tomorrow and asking for another meeting this week so I can talk about all the things I have done so far since our last meeting.
Last Thursday, Kailey and I have talked about putting another place on our possible-venue list. Papillon, is a cafe in downtown Lafayette and Ms. Taylor have told us about the lady who is a manager of the cafe. The lady is known for being generous for other artists who seeks to exhibit their art works.
I called her number and the lady did not say "yes" but said she would like to look at some of the art works that would be in the exhibition.
So set up a meeting for the next Friday to see her on 2 o' clock. This Friday is going to be very busy after school instead of relaxing with friends. I also need to meet with the lady from the library for the same business.
After this Friday, there shall be many changes in the project.

Entry 2: Just made a call with a person from the possible venue!

This is quite exciting yet nerve wracking.
Today, in Ms. Kaplan's room, I made a call to Lafayette Library to see if they are interested in opening a show for the art show.
The lady who answered the call, Cathy, was very friendly.

I explained her the situation and my project and it seemed like she was open to help me.
However, it seems like we have some issue with the schedule, since Lafayette Library is holding so many events for the community. Not only that, we might also have some space issue. She told me that there might not be a space for 20 art work.
We set an appointment for next Friday at 3:30 so she can show me the gallery and the hall she was telling me about.

If the library doesn't work out, I might go for the Veteran's Hall in Lafayette. I have never been there but my mom said if we have a show at the Veteran's hall and donate money for a charity that helps the veterans, that could be a really great event. I think that is a fantastic alternative plan since I have a lot of respect for the veterans.

After the phone call, Ms. Kaplan and Ms. Findlay told me that I sounded very professional on the phone. That made me really happy.

My parents have been very supportive of my project so far. They think it is going to be a great experience for me. They know that I am determined to be a productive member of the society so they also know that taking English WISE was a good choice I made.

Kailey and I talked today in brunch about changing the time for the show. Since her community service paper and my research project is due in April, we thought early April could be a good time for the show instead of May.

One thing I am a little bit afraid of right now, is getting too many artist involved in this project. I know all the possible venues will have a limited space and I can not get all the awesome talented kids in the show although I really want to.

So far, both Kailey and I are submitting art pieces, and Ted, Ryan, Laurel, and Tiffany are submitting their works. I also want to ask Lisa Fishbein if she is interested in submitting some of her fashion works since she is known for her talent in fashion and designing. That would give a nice variety in the exhibit.

Tomorrow is our "first test" in English WISE. Everyone in the class is suppose to sign-in instead of us having a whole class. It sounds very simple but this is a small test of whether the students in WISE can be responsible or not. This project is after all about responsibility and handling things like an adult.
I am excited to have my first day of sign-in WISE day tomorrow and see how it goes.

Entry 01: Started a blog for my Senior Project.

So far a Senior Project for me...

Hi, my name is Kyung. I am a Senior at Acalanes high school who just started second semester.
I am an English WISE student. I chose to take WISE over English 4 because WISE is something closer to the adulthood than a regular English class.

No one will be there to get on my case for not getting things done. I need to manage my time on my own and make my own decisions how adults should be. It is a class that teaches responsibility and real productivity.

My objective of my senior project is to learn what is like to book, and open an art show. Since I could hold a crayon, my dream was to become an artist. When I grow up, I want to have my own art studio, make art and share them with any one I can around the world. Art has been not only my dream, but my identity and main purpose of life.
By doing this project, I will take a small step towards my dream.

The show is planned for somewhere in May so far, and hopefully at a venue in Lafayette with students who are also passionate about art like me.
So far, I am working with Kailey Conrad, Katie Mitroff, and Tiffany Lum. Kailey and I talked to Ryan Ellery who is known for his talent in music and he is willing to play songs at the show.

The process of planning and day dreaming about the show is fun but I know I must take action soon. The most important thing would be getting a venue. Without a venue, it would be impossible to hold a show.
Mr. Takahashi, my mentor for the project thinks so too. He recommended that I start calling people to get a venue soon. That is on my top to-do-list. I am planning on calling Lafayette Library soon. Kailey and I both agreed that the library is a great place for a show. We would have a good crowd and good space.

I am very glad to have Mr. Takahashi as my mentor for this project. There are several reasons why I asked him to be my mentor and the most important reason is for his professionalism and productivity. I was in his Algebra A class during my Freshman year, and I remember he was one of the most straight forward teacher I have ever had. He did not miss a thing when he was explaining about each assignment. If I did something wrong in that class, it was entirely my fault and there was nothing to blame on him. Also, Mr. Takahashi is not only a math teacher but also the athletic director at my school. Every time I visit his classroom during break or lunch, he is occupied with many students either for math or sports. That is a lot to juggle and I admire him for it.

To move on, I made a blog today for my project which is required to do. I have had total of 8 blogs before so making a blog is not a hard thing for me. I am looking forward to develop this blog as I proceed through my second semester.

Lastly, I will end my posts with some pictures of my art work to show where I am skill wise. I am also hoping to put some of these in the show.
